Yoc was born in Guatemala City and now lives in San Lorenzo del Escorial,
in the foothills of the mountains north of Madrid. The whole of his more
than twenty-five-year career has been devoted to furthering his learning
and development as an artist. Self-criticism, the striving for perfection
and the search for new forms of expression have yielded remarkable findings
at both technical and formal level. What better proof of the artist’s
drive and courage than his work itself: varied in terms of subject matter
and medium, yet, at the same time, homogeneous. Yoc has investigated all
sorts of disciplines: painting, drawing, engraving, illustration …
all of them with enviable success.
Various planes blend together in his work. Starting with the observation
of the reality that surrounds him, Yoc incorporates animals, figures with
a strong psychological charge, fears and desires. The outcome is the creation
of an atmosphere that is both eclectic and personal. Fantasy mingles with
reality, and the Mayan legacy so clearly seen in the artist, blends harmoniously
with other influences, such as Renaissance drawing or the dreamlike world
of symbolism.
